Nursing Story Slam

The Nursing Story Slam brings together nurse storytellers from Penn Nursing and Penn Medicine to share their true, personal stories that explore the breadth, depth, and diversity of nursing.

Nursing Story Slam Submissions

Want to tell your story? We want to hear it! We are now accepting submissions for the next Nursing Story Slam through the form below. The event will take place on February 16, 2022 from 7pm - 8:30pm ET, and will be held in person at the Annenberg Center for Performing Arts (COVID permitting). If needed, information on how to attend virtually will be released prior to the event.

Submissions must be in the context of the event theme. The theme for this year’s event is Creativity. Creativity is defined as the use of imagination, the ability to create meaningful ideas, and the capacity to transcend traditional rules, patterns, and relationships. Creativity is what nurses do every day. Nurses use their creativity at the bedside, in the classroom, the research lab, out in the community, and everywhere they work and practice. Recently, nurses have had to be more creative than ever and we want to hear how you’ve used your creative prowess to enhance the work you do.

Please note: If your application is accepted and you are selected as one of our nurse storytellers, you will be required to attend a 3-hour virtual, synchronous master-storytelling workshop and coaching session with First Person Arts prior to the Nursing Story Slam event. The workshop will include:

  • A presentation by First Person Arts with an example storytelling session
  • A writing session to review the storytelling “building blocks” and then refine your story
  • A storytelling session where storytellers will get to practice performing their stories and receive feedback

The workshop will be held in person or virtually in December 2021/January 2021. The exact date and time has not yet been determined.

Nurse storytellers will not be permitted to have notes for their Nursing Story Slam performance. We will help you prepare to be the best storyteller you can be!

Any questions, please email us at innovation@nursing.upenn.edu.

The inaugural event was held in February 2019, our second annual event was held in February 2020, and our third annual event in February 2021. Now in its fourth year, the Nursing Story Slam is once again supported through the generosity of Sandy Samberg, Nu’94, GNu’95, and her husband, Joe Samberg. The event is a partnership between Penn Nursing, Penn Medicine, and First Person Arts
