Associate Professor Emerita of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing
Telephone: (215) 573-2184
For many years, Dr. Carino served as the clinical director of psychological nursing at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Using her own experiences as an example, she spearheaded development of the clinician educator role and held simultaneous appointments in both the Hospital and the School of Nursing. In addition, Dr. Carino played a major role in developing a curriculum for a wellness program and helped to found the The Wellness Community in west Philadelphia, which assists patients from underserved populations with cancer recovery. For these efforts, she was honored with the Allegheny University/Gimbel Philadelphia Award in 1996. One of her lasting legacies within the School of Nursing was her vision of interdisciplinary practice. Dr. Carino saw early on the utility of developing new science from a perspective of many disciplines, a research imperative that continues to impact the School’s philosophy and mission.
