Levia A. Sutton, MSN, CRNA
Levia Sutton is a second-year PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She is a Penn Presidential Fellow and Fontaine Society Fellow. In 2003, Levia earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Binghamton University in New York and entered clinical practice as a critical care nurse. She has provided care in ICUs in New York City and, after relocating, in Philadelphia. In 2006, Levia entered the Nurse Anesthesia program at Penn Nursing and graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing in 2008.
As a nurse anesthetist with over 15 years of anesthesia experience, Levia brings a vision for health equity anchored to her commitment to centering the humanity of the people she serves. She has provided care for diverse populations at trauma centers and health systems in and around Philadelphia and on the West Coast in areas of Northern California. Serving patients in underserved communities emerged as her passion and her research interests are informed by her diverse clinical and life experiences.
Levia is interested in the lived experiences and health of racialized groups in communities affected by violence and trauma. She intends to examine the systems and structures that impact racial health disparities. Levia aims to build a program of research that advances health equity and impacts health policies to support the well-being of communities of color made vulnerable by marginalization and social inequality.
