Course Description

This is a service learning, clinical, hands-on course. Students learn about the country, health care and culture by working side by side with health care workers in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. Emphasis is on Health Promotion, teaching, clinical care, and Community Health.

In-Country Partners*, including but not limited to:

  • Hospitalito Atitlan
  • Puertas Abiertas School
  • Centro de Salud Community Health
  • Saving Mothers Midwifery Education/training

*Clinical partners may vary annually as may the country of study. Service learning may take place in the U.S. if political environment or pandemic/contagion prohibit travel.

Prerequisites:

  • Spanish proficiency preferred
  • Flexibility and confidence in travel
  • Team spirit

Registration Details

  • Counts as 1 CU
  • Counts as experiential course for global health minor
  • May meet a sector requirement (TBD)

Finances/Program Costs

The SON submits budget (course fee, travel and living expenses) to Student Financial Services to be added to student’s “cost of attendance.”  may qualify for grants and/or loans

   

Program/Course Fee ~$1200* includes:

Out-of-pocket Expenses:

  • In-country expenses: food, lodging,  breakfast and dinner
  • Ground transportation (Airport to Santiago), boat/ferry transportation
  • Airfare
  • Lunches
  • Personal shopping

Interview with the course director. Sign up for a time or email guidera@nursing.upenn.edu. Bring a one page summary noting : why this course interests you, your comfort with travel, and your Spanish language level.
