Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Alicia graduated from Smith College in 2003 with a degree in English and Anthropology. She lived in New York City for many years, working as an early childhood teacher, museum educator, and nanny. Chronic illness led to a change in careers: Alicia gradually became a freelance writer, craft book author and editor, crochet designer, and magazine contributor. She decided to pursue nursing after spending an extensive amount of time over a decade with nurses and doctors, as a frequent inpatient and outpatient, and enrolled at Penn Nursing in the Hillman Scholars Program in Nursing Innovation. She is interested in pediatric critical and chronic care, narrative medicine, PTSD, the emotional experience of chronic illness, compassion fatigue, pain medicine, and alternate, innovative forms of media for producing and disseminating health education.
