Alumna and Advisor Receives 2019 Alumni Award of Merit
Penn Nursing alumna and Board of Advisors Chair Andrea Berry Laporte has been recognized with one of the University of Pennsylvania’s highest alumni awards as a 2019 recipient of the Alumni Award of Merit. Each year, Penn Alumni presents the award to distinguished alumni volunteers who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the University. Laporte was one of five Alumni Award of Merit recipients this year, honored at a gala held November 8 at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
Andrea Berry Laporte, Nu’69, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and received a Master of Science in Nursing from NYU. She first joined Penn Nursing’s Board of Advisors in 2001 and continued as a member until 2010, during which time she served as co-chair of the School’s Where Science Leads Campaign with former Nursing Advisor Pedie Killebrew, CW’61, a previous recipient of the Alumni Award of Merit, from 2006-2009. As the largest private school of nursing fundraising effort in the nation’s history and the most successful comprehensive campaign in the then 123-year history of nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, under her direction, the Campaign exceeded its original goal of $60 million to raise a total of $77.5 million. Mrs. Laporte rejoined the School of Nursing’s Advisor Board in June 2016, and as Chair, brings her experience to the leadership of Penn Nursing’s current Innovating for Life and Living Campaign.
“As an alumna, Andie has had an incredible impact in her service to Penn Nursing, the Institute for Contemporary Art, and the University,” said Penn Nursing’s Dean Antonia M. Villarruel. “She clearly demonstrates – in whatever leadership role she has assumed – the skill and compassion that nurses bring to the table. We are so fortunate to have her leading our Board of Advisors and are thrilled that she has been recognized with this prestigious award.”
In addition to serving on the School of Nursing’s Board of Advisors, Mrs. Laporte is a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and a member of ICA’s Board of Advisors, for which she previously served as Chair for six years. Her philanthropy at Penn spans four decades in support of Penn Nursing, the ICA, and Penn Dental Medicine. At the School of Nursing, in addition to being a proud supporter of the Center for Global Women’s Health, she has established the Andrea B. Laporte Endowed Professorship, the Killebrew-Laporte Center for Admissions & Student Affairs with friend and former fellow Advisor Pedie Killebrew, and most recently, she established the Laporte Challenge Fund. At the ICA, she created the Andrea B. Laporte Curator Fund. The daughter of Penn alumni Dorothy Thornburg Berry and Harrison M. Berry, Jr., she recently honored her father’s 30-year tenure at Penn Dental Medicine with the creation of an endowed scholarship in his name.
Having served on the University’s steering committee for the Making History Campaign, she currently serves in the same capacity for The Power of Penn Campaign.
