Meghani Appointed to NASEM Committee
Penn Nursing’s Salimah Meghani, PhD, MBE, RN, FAAN, Associate Professor of Nursing and Term Chair of Palliative Care in the Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences, and a member in the NewCourtland Center for Transitions and Health, has been appointed to a National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine planning committee.
The committee on Pain and Symptom Management for People with Serious Illness in the Context of the Opioid Crisis is part of the Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness, and builds on the work of the Dying in America report, on which Meghani served.
“We are encountering two intersecting crises in the United States—a pain crisis and a worsening opioid crisis.” said Meghani, who is also a Senior Fellow at Penn’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics.
This committee will develop an agenda for a workshop as part of the Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness, to examine the best ways to address the pain and symptom management needs of Americans who also have serious illness in the context of the widespread opioid use disorder. The workshop will be held on November 29th, 2018 in Washington DC.
