Penn alumna, Nia Ebrahim, who double majored in Nutrition at Nursing and Biology at SAS, had the opportunity to work with Project Harar, a charity working with people in Ethiopia suffering from a facial disfigurement, such as cleft lip, cleft palate, or tumors, and provides them access to treatment. More than 40% of the patients who arrive for treatment are too malnourished to undergo surgery, therefore a focus on nutritional support prior and post treatment is provided by Project Harar.

Nia traveled across three regions in Ethiopia training health workers in nutrition, speaking with families of malnourished children, as well as speaking with communities to help spread good nutritional practices. Speaking about her experience, Nia said “As a nutrition major, it was amazing getting to apply the lessons learned and skills developed at Penn Nursing to my experiences out in the real world. The experience I gained during my time in Ethiopia instilled in me a deeper appreciation for community nutrition work”.

Black Maternal Morbidity and Mortality - Beyond the WHY!

Black Maternal Health Week (April 11 - 17) is a weeklong opportunity to build awareness, activism, and amplify the voices of birth workers and Black mothers who have lived experience. We know why Black women and babies are dying during or after childbirth.  Penn Nursing’s Center for Global Women’s Health, in collaboration with the National Coalition for 100 Black Women hosted a special panel presentation of dynamic birth workers and researchers who center the traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements while discussing best practices and next steps in increasing the birth outcomes of Black mothers. Renfield Award Impact Talk: Dr. Vandana Gopikumar

Dr. Vandana Gopikumar, the 2018 awardee of the Penn Nursing Renfield Foundation Award for Global Women’s Health, in a discussion moderated by Alison Ercole, MSN, BA, CRNP, PMHNP-BC, shared about the impact the award has had on her work.  Dr. Gopikumar is the Co-Founder of The Banyan and The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health, a nonprofit with the goal of promoting equitable mental health amongst socially disadvantaged groups, within a social justice framework.
