Joseph Schatz, DNP, CRNP, PMHNP-BC, CARN-AP
Joseph (Joe) Schatz (he/him) is the Director of the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Track at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and has over 10 years of teaching experience in both the academic and clinical settings. Joe works in the community and has experience in a variety of settings with individuals across the lifespan. Joe’s pragmatic and person-centered approach helps him effectively support individuals from all walks of life, and he has a special interest in supporting underserved populations. Joe’s practical teaching approach prepares students to “meet patients where they are” upon graduation.

Innovation
- Upon graduation with his MSN, Joe leveraged connections he made while at Penn Nursing to secure a job at a local federally qualified health center where he helped to develop and implement an integrated behavioral health program.
- Joe has led the PMHNP faculty in developing a comprehensive curriculum regarding substance use disorders. PMHNP students now graduate confident in their ability to assess and address substance use disorders across the lifespan. Clinical opportunities in the areas of MOUD and community-based harm reduction have been added to allow the students to actively apply what they’ve learned in the classroom.
- Joe has collaborated with colleagues to implement interdisciplinary simulation within the PMHNP curriculum (e .g., co-managing a patient experiencing postpartum depression with a midwifery student).
- Inspired by a podium presentation at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Joe collaborated with colleagues to build content regarding spiritual care into the PMHNP curriculum. These curricular enhancements culminated in students applying this content in a simulation that focused on trauma-informed spiritual care for survivors of gun violence.
Social Justice
- Joe is the co-director of the HRSA Behavioral Health Workforce and Education Training (BHWET) grant at Penn Nursing. The goal of BHWET is to graduate students who are adequately prepared to support underserved populations as well as support curricular and clinical enhancements in many areas (e.g., integrated care, substance use disorders, trauma-informed care, and violence prevention).
- Joe has integrated longitudinal classroom assignments that push students to have difficult conversations about social determinants of health.

- Joe has been involved in EMS since 2004 and continues to run on the ambulance every-other-weekend.
