Lecturer

Dr. Barnes serves as the Nurse Manager of a Med/Surg and Oncology unit at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. He manages a staff of 63 FTE’s, balances a multi-million-dollar annual budget, and collaborates on a number of multidisciplinary committees. He has also served as Interim Clinical Director for Emergency, Medical, and Behavioral Nursing, Interim Nurse Manager for the Inpatient Psychiatry and Outpatient Addictions units, and Assistant Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department.

Dr. Barnes has led a number of quality improvement projects, including: improving perception of safety in the inpatient hospital setting; reducing the length of stay for patients receiving chemotherapy; decreasing CAUTI infections; and, decreasing blood culture contamination in the Emergency Department. His doctoral area of focus surrounds microaggressions against LGBTQ+ hospital staff.

Dr. Barnes received his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Executive Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. He also received his Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Pennsylvania, with a minor in Quality Improvement and Post-Master’s in Transformative Nursing Education. He received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Drexel University.
