New Gift to Penn Nursing Continues Sands Nursing Scholars Program
Delaney R. Lawson, BSN, RN, Nu’18 chose to attend Penn Nursing for numerous reasons—Ivy League education, commitment to excellence, faculty expertise, career opportunities—but it was the Estelle M. Sands and George H. Sands Nursing Scholars program that made attending possible. “The funding from the Sands Nursing Scholar Program made a tremendous difference for me—it truly eased the financial burden of affording tuition,” she said. “And later, after graduation, the program granted me the opportunity to work at a prestigious medical center.”

Penn Nursing’s 2022 commencement is in the history books. It was the first in-person graduation held in two years! The graduates, their families, friends, and the Penn Nursing community, gathered at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on May 16, 2022. We celebrated their achievements, their studies, their work, their honors, and we welcomed them among the ranks of the Penn Nursing Alumni.
Inspiring Impact: How One Campaign Changed Everything
The numbers are impressive. More than 4,300 generous donors. Over 13,400 gifts made. And in the end, Penn Nursing’s Innovating for Life and Living Campaign—part of Penn’s larger Power of Penn Campaign—raised $3 million more than its $60 million goal thanks to its Board of Advisors, lead volunteers, and many donors and friends.

Exploring Equity Barriers Before a Firearm Safety Trial
When evaluating the success or failure of efforts to implement evidence-based interventions, ensuring that implementation is equitable across populations is important. The need to attend to equity has been widely accepted but little guidance has been offered with regard to how to do so within the context of implementation trials. Before launching a hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial focused on firearm safety promotion in pediatric primary care, an interdisciplinary research team including investigators from University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, Henry Ford Health, and Kaiser Permanente Colorado developed a unique five-step engagement process to prospectively ground the trial in an equity lens.
Exploring the Effectiveness of Telehealth in Opioid Use Disorder
The majority of individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) face access barriers to evidence-based treatment. While the COVID-19 pandemic offered an opportunity to address OUD treatment access barriers by allowing for expanded use of telehealth, is it not yet clear if this technology will help eliminate those barriers or exacerbate pre-existing treatment inequities.
