Stephanie Acquaye
Stephanie Acquaye is in her first year of the Hillman Scholars Program. Her research interests involve the delivery of and access to health care services across the perinatal period. Stephanie has a particular interest in understanding and addressing health disparities related to breastfeeding and is interested in exploring the ways in which diverse, interprofessional care can abate some of these disparities. She is also a birth doula and has conducted an integrative review on the role of doulas in promoting breastfeeding initiation and duration.

Hillman Scholars Volunteer to Work at COVID-19 Testing Site
Stephen Bonett (PENN ’20) and Clare Whitney (PENN ’20) joined dozens of members from the Philadelphia Medical Reserve Corps and helped to staff the South Philadelphia COVID-19 drive through testing site. The Corp is an all-volunteer group of medical and nonmedical professionals who act as backup for the city health department during health crises and large-scale events.

Helping Health Care Providers Support Black Breastfeeding Families
Despite breastfeeding being recommended for at least two years, only 36 percent of all infants are still breastfed at their first birthday. Black/African American mothers are least likely to initiate breastfeeding with initiation rates of only 74 percent compared to 90 percent of Asian mothers with a national average of 84 percent. Given the disparities in breastfeeding initiation, there are likely to be equivalent disparities in breastfeeding duration.
