Clínica de Familia La Romana, Dominican Republic: A Service-Learning Experience
NOTE: Given the uncertainty of travel costs and feasibility during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, details are subject to change.
This is a potential opportunity, with Penn Nursing Course Director approval, to meet part or all of the clinical hours requirement of N380.
Clínica de Familia La Romana (Clínica de Familia) provides medical attention and psychosocial support to adults and children with HIV, sex workers, adolescents, men who have sex with men, Haitian migrants, and other highly vulnerable populations in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. In addition to clinical and programmatic rotations, all students also participate in a research or public health project at Clínica de Familia. Students with Clinica de Familia La Romana are involved in a process to improve the quality of care and contribute to the current programs via their experience, initiative and research skills. As part of their project, students will deliver a final product (e.g. a study, report, analysis, recommendations) and facilitate a final presentation to the staff. The goal of the program is to improve the health of underserved populations through the involvement of global health students and professionals engaged in research, education and service.
