Course Description

The purpose of this course is for students to gain direct, hands-on public health experience focused on preventing and responding to gendered-based violence and gendered health disparities in Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies. Students who sign up for this course will be placed at a host site in Trinidad for four weeks to conduct pre-determined activities focused on preventing and responding to gender-based violence and gendered health disparities. Students will have a Pre-Service Orientation in Trinidad prior to serving at host sites, and weekly 3-hour lectures at the University of West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine campus

Through this service-learning experience students will learn barriers that practitioners face in Trinidad and Tobago trying to implement evidence-based strategies and interventions focused on gender-based violence and gendered health disparities, and will gain knowledge and skills to assist them in becoming compassionate health leaders in culturally diverse contexts.

  • Language requirement - English
  • Flexibility and confidence with independent travel

Finances/Program Costs

The SON submits budget (course fee, travel and living expenses) to Student Financial Services to be added to student’s “cost of attendance.”  may qualify for grants and/or loans; * some students may qualify for significant cost reduction; hence the fee range “$950 to $2716”

   

Program/Course Fee ~$950 to $2716* includes:

Out-of-pocket Expenses:

  • registration
  • 2-day Pre-Service Orientation including lectures, breakfasts, lunches and dinners
  • 4 weeks of host site/field placement (@ 32 hours per week) including private transportation fees
  • Transportation fees: Airport pickup and drop/off; weekly grocery trips for food;
  • 4 weeks of guest lectures focused on gender-based violence and course reflection (3 hours weekly)
  • Dorm stay: Private air conditioned studio in University Hall with bathroom, stove, cabinets and refrigerator for each student
  • Steel-pan drum yard excursion
  • 2 eco-excursions
  • Airfare, meals (except orientation) and local transportation fees for leisure activities are not included
  • Program fee covers 4 weeks stay. For 6 week stay, additional fees apply.
