Ian Jeong
Ian Jeong is a senior in the School of Nursing from Palisades Park, New Jersey, pursuing a minor in Healthcare Management Services. He is particularly interested in understanding how policies and the environment affect population health.
To gain more experience, he participated in Short Term Educational Experiences for Research (STEER), a research internship through the Perelman School of Medicine, where he studied the relationship between male reproductive health and environmental toxicology.
Outside of class, he has been active in the LGBTQ community on campus since coming to Penn. In collaboration with the Penn Medicine Program for LGBT Health and Penn Center for Public Health Initiatives, as a member of Nurses at Penn Understanding Sexuality in Healthcare (PUSH), the student group aimed at promoting LGBTQ inclusivity in health care, Ian organized a panel discussion on queer communities of color and their access to health services. They examined access to health service from healthcare policy, immigration justice, and social work perspectives.
Additionally, he produced the stage adaptation of Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” for African American Arts Alliance (4A), and currently serves as the Alumni Relations Chair of 4A. He is excited to further his understanding of healthcare, and is looking forward to organizing more workshops to promote quality care and health equities for marginalized patient populations.

Nursing Students Engage

They’re at free COVID-19 testing sites and packing meals inside local nonprofits. You can spot them presenting legislative resolutions and chatting with marginalized populations about their greatest needs. Just as they have since the school’s earliest days, Penn Nursing students are consistently bringing their skills out of the classroom and into local communities, while learning more about those communities in the process. Whether they choose service-focused classes, student clubs, paid work, or volunteer opportunities, Penn Nursing students today are more tapped into the city around them than ever before. Here’s what that engagement looks like for nine current undergrads.
