Dr. Jeannette A. Rogowski’s research focuses on nurse staffing and practice environments in neonatal intensive care units and patient outcomes for premature infants. Dr. Rogowski is a member of the Board of Directors of the Vermont Oxford Network, an international network of neonatal intensive care units whose mission is to improve the quality and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families. She is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and an Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Leonard Davis Institute for Health Economics. She serves as an Associate Editor for Health Economics and as a member of the editorial board of Health Affairs. She has served on numerous national advisory committees including the National Advisory Committee for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research, the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on Understanding Premature Birth and Assuring Healthy Outcomes, and the Steering Committee for the National Institute on Aging’s Health and Retirement Study.

Study Shows Missed Nursing Care is a Key Factor in Adverse Outcomes for Very Low Birthweight Infants
Sometimes hospital staff nurses cannot provide required care due to time constraints. This reality can contribute to potentially dire outcomes for very low birthweight (VLBW) infants, who weigh less than 3.3 lbs. at birth. These newborns depend on the nurse for survival. Missed nursing care is likely clinically relevant to whether VLBW infants develop an infection, develop a brain hemorrhage, or even die. Given post-pandemic staffing shortages and the increased burden placed on nurses, routine measurement of missed care and managerial efforts to prevent it could be vital to improving the health and life course of VLBW infants.

New Tool Measures Moral Distress in Pandemic Nursing Care
The COVID‐19 pandemic created novel patient care circumstances that may have increased nurses’ moral distress, including COVID‐19 transmission risk and end‐of‐life care without family present. Moral distress is a growing concern in healthcare with implications for both provider and patient outcomes. However, until now, established moral distress instruments do not capture these novel aspects of pandemic nursing care.
