BSN Student Accepted to Rigorous Immersion Program

Each year only 10 people are selected to participate in the rigorous Cleveland Clinic’s Bioethics Immersion Program. Joining these few is Penn Nursing’s Sydney Axson, who hopes to expand our understandings on the role family members and caregivers have on health related decisions.

Penn Nursing’s Sydney Axson was recently accepted to the Cleveland Clinic’s Bioethics Immersion Program. The rigorous program consists of a three-day preparatory intensive course in April and an immersion experience tailored to the participant’s areas of interest and personal schedule. Typically, the immersion experience will focus on one specialty within clinical ethics. It will also include experiencing the clinical ethics consultation service at the Cleveland Clinic, which conducts over 500 consultations annually. Only ten people are selected to participate in this program each year.

“This program will allow to me experience the decisions families must face during critical health events. I hope my future work will contribute to a better understanding of the important role family members and caregivers play when it comes to making health related decisions, how they impact patient prognosis, and how we can better equip families and caregivers,” said Axson.

Axson is a student of Penn Nursing’s accelerated BSN program and Hillman Scholars Program student. She is due to graduate December 2016.
