HUP Alumni Association

The HUP Nurses Alumni Association embodies the legacy of excellence of nursing education at Penn. In 1886, the newly established training school at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) put the University at the forefront of nursing clinical leadership, where it remains today.

Welcome, HUP Alumni

As president, I am joined by a dedicated group who volunteer to provide you with a vibrant HUP Alumni Association. I would like to publicly thank our current and past volunteers, and I invite you to contact me if you are interested in getting involved.

As graduates of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, we were the first Penn Nurses. Today’s School of Nursing at Penn has embraced our alumni and honors our founding date of 1887 as the beginning of nursing education at Penn. We value our association with Penn’s School of Nursing, and I regularly represent you on the Penn Nursing Alumni Board. The HUP legacy is in good hands.

Warm regards,
Linda S. Knox, RN, Ph.D., HUP’74, Nu’81, GNu’86, GRN ’95

The HUP Nurses Alumni Association  The HUP pin

Since 1887, Mary J. Burns, the first graduate, has been followed by many distinguished alumni including Theresa I. Lynch, a 1920 graduate, who founded and served as the first dean of the Penn’s current School of Nursing. From 1886-1978, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania educated over 5,000 nurses.

HUP alumni continue this rich tradition as educators, clinicians and administrators who elevate the quality of care for each and every patient.

The HUP Nursing Alumni Association works in partnership with Penn Nursing Alumni to honor this legacy. Alumni volunteers on the HUP Nursing Alumni Board plan spring and fall luncheons in rotating locations in the greater Philadelphia area, a major reunion every five years, and sends members a biannual newsletter to communicate HUP Nursing alumni news.
