Philosophy of the Women's Health Care Studies Programs

We believe in and encourage self-directed learning, critical thinking, and the application of knowledge and skills in clinical situations.

We also believe that the autonomous practice of nurse practitioners/midwives is based on the health promotion model and interdependent practice. Interdependent practice emphasizes the unique aspects each health professional brings to the care of a client. For the nurse practitioner/midwife this involves family-centered and comprehensive care to essentially healthy women and their families.

Our care is shaped by a deep respect for human dignity and worth, an understanding of the variety of cultures, and the woman's right to self-determination in healthcare.

"The education that I received at PENN was exemplary, first class, and top notch. I was exposed to idea of evidence-based practice long before the concept became a buzz word in our nursing domain".
