Registration Information
General Information
Registration
Fall & Spring Terms:
For a two-week period in November and March, you may request courses for the upcoming Fall or Spring term using the on-line registration system called Penn InTouch.
Registration for courses during Advanced Registration is NOT on a first-come, first-serve basis; you may register at any time within this time period and not be at a disadvantage. You are REQUESTING courses; the automated schedular will assign your courses based on your entered preferences and course restrictions. It is STRONGLY recommended that you request your courses during this time period. If you register after the advance registration period closes, you will be competing with everyone who has already registered and may not get the sections you want. About a month after registration, your schedule will appear in Penn InTouch.
Advance Registration for SPRING 2010 will run from NOVEMBER 9-22. It does not matter if you register at 8AM on 11/9 or 4PM on 11/22, you have the SAME chance to get your desired courses. We do suggest you register by 5PM on 11/19/09 for the Office of Academic Affairs will be unable to resolve any issues that may occur if you attempt on the last weekend of registration. Help for navigating the Advanced Registration System is available here. You can also utilize the Course Search and Mock Schedule tools to assist you in the process.
Summer Terms:
Registration for courses offered in the summer is an open enrollment process that begins in late March. Registration is through the Penn InTouch system. Course availability for the summer is often on a first-come, first-served basis; therefore, EARLY registration is essential for many courses.
Drop/Request
Approximately two weeks after the close of Advance Registration during the fall and spring, you may change your schedule if you wish, depending on the availability of courses. Students may add to or modify their registration until the end of the second week of classes. You may drop until the end of the fifth week of classes. You are permitted to withdraw from a course until the end of the 10th week of classes. You may change the grade type of a class (grade, pass/fail) until the end of the drop period. Instructions for Drop/Request are located here.
If you missed Advance Registration and are not on any Hold, you may register at this time. Unlike the waiting period after Advance Registration, changes you make to your schedule during this period are made immediately.
Registration Pointers
Registration Holds:
Remember that you will not be able to register for courses until you have spoken with your academic advisor and received approval to register. This applies to all BSN & MSN students for all terms.
Registering for a Multi-Part Course (Lecture/recitation, lecture/lab, lecture/clinical):
Be particularly sure you request (during advance registration)/register (during drop/request) for all parts of any "multi-part" courses, including labs, lectures, clinical, and recitations. If you do not sign up for all parts of a multi-part course, the registration system will drop you from the entire course.
Important Things to Remember:
For Penn In Touch, you MUST have a PennKey and Password. For information on obtaining a PennKey, please see http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey.
Scheduling Clinicals:
Most class activities end 10 minutes before their listed end time so that students can travel to their next class. HOWEVER, when scheduling clinicals, students should plan on being in attendance from the exact start time to the exact end time. It is also IMPERATIVE to schedule TRAVEL TIME between campus and the student's clinical site.
Permits to Register for Courses:
For courses which require a permit, you must obtain the permit from the departmental office. Advisors cannot issue permits. For Nursing course permits, please email osi@nursing.upenn.edu.
If you receive a permit from a department to register for a course, this does not mean that you are registered for the course! You still have to use Penn In Touch officially register for the course. All permits are dropped from the registration system at the end of the registration period.
