Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to finish?

The NHCM program is traditionally a 5-year program.  However, students with Advanced Placement credits and those who have taken more than the typical course load of 5.5 cu per semester have been able to complete the program in 4 to 4 ½ years. 

As a NHCMer, am I in both the School of Nursing and the Wharton School?

Yes.  Students who graduate from the program will obtain a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor’s of Science in Economics with a concentration in Health Care Management & Policy.  Students take their coursework from both schools with classes ranging from finance and accounting to anatomy and physiology. 

What if I want to join the program after coming to Penn?

Freshmen students who are interested in the NHCM program must complete Econ 1, Econ 2, and Math 104 in order to apply for the program. They should also contact Emily Ford (epapir@nursing.upenn.edu) and Marianne Lipa (mlipa@wharton.upenn.edu) to learn more about the application process. 

Do I have time to study abroad?

Yes, students in the program have been able to study abroad.  Students are able to apply for any of the exchange programs that the School of Nursing or the Wharton School offers.  Please visit this website for more details.

Is it possible to dual concentrate in Wharton?

Yes, students are able to dual concentrate in Wharton.  Students can meet with their academic advisor in order to develop an individualized plan of study to meet their specific goals.

Is it possible to include minors with the program?

Yes, students can choose to minor in any area of their interest. A list of available nursing minors can be found on the minors information page.

What can I do after I graduate from the program?

Graduates of the program have gone on to become leaders in health care and business.  Many have pursued careers in clinical practice, hospital administration, health care consulting, nonprofit organizations, policy, and global health.  The opportunities to impact change after graduating from this program are endless.

Do NHCM students take classes separately from other students?

No, NHCM students take classes with all the other Wharton and Nursing students.

What are living arrangements like?

Most students live in first-year resident halls with all the other first-year students. However, if the student wishes to live with another NHCM student, they can request it.

What if I am considering pre-med or medical school?
Students have the option of doing additional minors or other coordinated dual degree programs. For more information, please visit this page.

Are there opportunities or activities in the program for students to gain exposure to the professional field?

Every semester, students organize events for alumni return to talk about their careers and network with the current students.
