Philadelphia - Last Wednesday, some new flyers appeared around the School of Nursing. These weren't your typical signs, announcing health-themed lectures or NCLEX-review courses. The flyers are part of a new campaign by the Student Nurses At Penn called "Penn Nursing votes."
The campaign is meant to encourage current and future nurses to get out to vote on November 4th - in their scrubs. The idea for the drive, meant to make the general public aware that nurses are poilitcally active, was born over conversations about the lack of a political voice that nurses seem to have in the United States. "There are over 2.9 million Registered Nurses in the United States, making nurses the largest group of health care providers in the country," states one poster. "We have strength in numbers. Make sure everyone knows it."
The campaign is part of a larger effort to engage nursing students - and the greater Penn community - in discussions about health care issues in the upcoming election.
