Other Funded Research
Some of Penn Nursing's innovations in research are conducted through the
following areas:
CDC Center for Autism
Director
Jennifer Pinto-Martin, PhD, MPH
The CDC Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research and
Epidemiology (CADDRE) is one of six such centers funded across the nation to
study both the increasing prevalence and etiology of autistic spectrum disorders
(ASD). The CADDRE is also engaged in research on early screening and
identification of ASD, nursing care for families with children newly diagnosed
with ASD, sleep disorders in children with ASD, and the psychological health of
siblings of children with ASD.

The Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence at the University of
Pennsylvania School of Nursing builds on an established foundation of research,
education and practice in aging. The Center is part of a major initiative by the
John A. Hartford Foundation to build academic geriatric nursing capacity in the
United States. This award recognizes Penn's long-standing record in gerontologic
research, education and practice.
Our aims are to expand the science through research in individualized care,
transitional care, and special problems in the areas of mental health, traumatic
injury, sleep disruption, and cancer care; develop exportable innovations in
care that are germane to national policy and system changes, including a
multisite demonstration of the transitional care model and translation of the
nursing home palliative care model to homebound frail elders; use a web-based
approach to disseminate new knowledge and its application through our
Gerontologic Nursing Consultation Service and national network of academic
nursing practice; and to educate the next generation of scholars and leaders by
integrating gerontologic practice and research experiences at the undergraduate
level, linking with the Wharton School to enhance long term care nursing
administration at the master's level, and providing pre- and post-doctoral
training in gerontologic nursing research, especially focused on outcomes and
improved systems of care.
