Visiting Scholars

Throughout the academic year, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing hosts visiting professors and scholars from across the United States and around the world to foster an exchange of ideas with faculty and students at colloquia and seminars. Visiting professors also provide consultations about critical issues in nursing around the world. The mission of the Visiting Scholars program is to advance innovative research and to promote awareness of various global perspectives. This effort to stimulate dialogue about critical issues in nursing both nationally and internationally has brought numerous scholars to Penn Nursing.

During the fall 2008 semester, the School of Nursing will host Dr. Carol Boyd from the University in Michigan and Dr. Patricia Brennan from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Carol Boyd, PhD, MSN, FAAN

Dr. Boyd is a nationally recognized scholar in the study of women and substance abuse. She has several NIH-funded projects, all of which examine the relationship of gender to drug seeking and drug abuse prevention. Her early research examined the circumstances under which women begin to use heroin and crack, but she has expanded her focus to include cigarettes, alcohol and prescription drugs. Currently, Dr. Boyd is studying gender differences in prescription drug abuse among secondary and college students using web-based research protocols.

Patricia Brennan, PhD, MSN

Dr. Brennan investigates the use of computer technologies, including the Internet, in the home-care of persons with complex health problems. She has developed and evaluated computer network services for home care of persons living with AIDS and for the caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's Disease. Her newest project, HeartCare, targets persons recovering from cardiac surgery and makes use of the web and multi-media to provide graduated, tailored home-care support.
