Associate Dean for Research
The Associate Dean for Research reports to the Dean of the School and provides vision and leadership to the School of Nursing’s research efforts in compliance with the School’s strategic plan.
Specific Areas of Responsibility
Ø Provides strategic planning and management of the School’s research agenda including policy making and oversight; the development of benchmarks; accountability for cost-effective operation of the Office for Nursing Research; promotion and facilitation of all research activities of the School; and promotion of grant writing for doctoral and post-doctoral students.
Ø Collaborates with the Dean, Associate Deans, Division Chairs, and other administrators in executing responsibilities and policies related to research, including the allocation and utilization of research space and resources and developing and enhancing linkages across the School.
Ø Directs the Office for Nursing Research, providing leadership and assistance in the development of faculty as productive investigators and scholars, and supervises the research office staff.
Ø Showcases research accomplishments of the SON faculty and students at each level of Penn’s top ranked undergraduate, masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral programs.
Ø Coordinates, negotiates, and directs the overall productivity and progress of research in the School, including research regulatory matters and oversight and guidance to the School’s research centers and leadership to the Center Directors Group.
Ø Provides leadership in projecting future research infrastructure needs and collaborates with faculty to secure funding for research development within the school.
Ø Guides external and internal review processes including reviews of the School’s research centers and research project audits.
Ø Provides leadership and support to faculty by assisting them in their efforts to increase their research productivity and launch new programs of research and sponsored projects.
Ø Provides leadership in the development of educational programs to orient new staff, faculty and students to University and School research policies and guidelines and to insure that all researchers in the School of informed of changes in policies.
Ø Provides mentorship to faculty, particularly junior faculty, in collaboration with other Associate Deans and Division Chairs.
Ø Oversees the implementation of University policies for post-doctoral fellows in the SON.
Ø Both within and outside the University, serves as an expert representative of the School’s research mission by articulating and representing the School’s research agenda. Works to establish interdisciplinary linkages across campus and outside the University.
Ø Understands and promotes administrative structures that advance the research mission of the School.
Ø Provides advisory support and leadership by serving on the Dean’s Advisory Group, the School’s administrative leadership team.
Ø Acts as an alternate for the Dean when needed.
