Migrating from PennNet ID to PennKey
Don't get locked out - Get your Key
Why the change?
As you know, security of
our electronic resources is of utmost importance. To improve network security,
the University moved to a new password system called
PennKey, which replaced the existing
PennNet ID and Password.
All Penn students, faculty and staff members will have to register their
PennKeys and passwords online. The timeframe for doing this
began
Monday, September 30, 2002 and ended Sunday, October
13, 2002. After October 13, 2002 only PennKey passwords will be
accepted for access to many PennNet systems such as Blackboard, Penn InTouch,
and Advisor InTouch.
PennNet IDs and Passwords
no longer work
Refer to the September 10 Almanac article, page 6, for more detail:
http://www.upenn.edu/almanac/v49pdf/020910/091002.pdf.
Before registering your PennKey, we recommend you review the up-to-date
information about PennKey on the following site:
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey
Once you have read this information, follow these steps to register your
PennKey:
Know your
current PennNet ID and Password.
You will need to enter them to identify yourself to the PennKey registration
system. If you are not sure, visit this website to test your PennNet ID and
password,
https://sentry.isc.upenn.edu/sw/pc_photo. If you've forgotten your
password, you can reset it by swiping your PennCard at one of the campus PennNet
ID swipe stations. For information and locations, see:
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/help/doc/passport/netid.html.
The Penncard swipe stations went out of
service on
October 14, 2002
Make sure
you're aware of current password rules and be prepared to establish a new
password. Though you may reuse your PennNet password as your PennKey password,
a new password offers the greatest amount of security. It's particularly
important to set a new password if you have used your PennNet password
elsewhere, on non-Penn systems, or have
shared it with anyone. Refer to the following for University rules
for setting passwords:
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/email/pswd_guide.html
Decide how you
want to be able to reset your PennKey password should you forget it. Refer to
the following for more detail:
http://www.upenn.edu/computing/pennkey/setreset/index.html
Register your PennKey at the following web address:
https://rosetta.upenn.edu/cgi-bin/websec/websec_authform?app=register_pennkey
The actual
process of registering your PennKey online takes only minutes, using the
web
address above. If you think you will need extra assistance to register
your PennKey, please contact the helpdesk.
How does this affect my email account at Nursing?
The username and
password you established for access to the School of Nursing email and file
servers will not change. These are local systems, which do not fall under the
purview of PennKey at this time. However, we do need to ensure secure access
to email for those using web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape
Navigator.
In order to be compliant with the University's requirement for secure
transmission, we are implementing a new security protocol called SSL which will
encrypt the username and password as well as the content of the email. As of
October 14, the address you will use for checking email via the Web will change
slightly (the only change is https
replaces http in the address).

New address for faculty and staff to check email
via the web:
https://webmail.nursing.upenn.edu/
New address for students to check email via the
web:
https://webmail.nursing.upenn.edu/
As always,
contact the OTIS Helpdesk helpis@nursing.upenn.edu, if you have any questions
or concerns.

I missed the October 13 deadline, what should I do?
A permanent PennKey registration site requiring a PIN
for authentication will be activated on Monday, October 14. Newcomers to Penn as
well as anyone who missed the October 13 deadline to create a PennNet ID and
password must obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and use this site to
register their PennKey. The registration procedure is described under
Registration Procedure Using a PIN.
