SUBJECT: Computer Purchase Options for Academic Year 2009-2010
Congratulations on your acceptance to the School of Nursing, and welcome to the University of Pennsylvania. As you know, having access to a computer is critical in order to link to the resources that will help you succeed. While the School provides access to public computing facilities, we highly recommend bringing your own computer. Specific software requirements may vary across academic programs, but we have found the University’s standard set of hardware recommendations will meet the wide-ranging needs of our students.
Please refer to the enclosed brochure from the campus Computer Connection’s annual Back-to-School sale. The configurations for desktop and laptop systems were derived in anticipation of your needs over the next four years, and discounts were negotiated for Macintosh and Windows platforms. Note: Apple computers are not fully supported in the School of Nursing, but many faculty, students and staff use their own Mac laptops successfully in our environment to access PennNet, email services, and web services.
If you plan to purchase a computer before arriving on campus, we recommend that you select one of the systems supported by the University. Use the brochure as a guide to choose the best system to meet your needs. If you plan to purchase a system from elsewhere or want to evaluate a system you already own, compare the specifications to those in the brochure. You may be able to find a less expensive system (with fewer features, less RAM or a slower processor), but it may not meet all your needs during your time at Penn.
You should also consider purchasing a printer. There are printers available in the School’s labs, with a per-page cost of $.07 for single- and $.05 for double-sided printing. Comparably-priced printers are also available in other campus labs.
Please refer questions about the sale (e.g., pricing and availability) to the phone number or email address on the brochure. For questions about computing at the School of Nursing, contact our helpdesk at 215-898-5981 (between 8:30AM - 5 PM, Monday - Friday), or send email to: helpis@nursing.upenn.edu . Enjoy the rest of your summer, and we look forward to your arrival.
