Kathleen G. Burke, PhD, RN
Program Director Nursing and Healthcare
Administration
and Health Leadership Programs
Director, Center of Professional Development
Dr.
Burke received her MSN from Widener University and her PhD from the University
of Pennsylvania. She has held a variety of administrative positions in the
School of Nursing and the University of Pennsylvania Health System over the last
24 years. Dr. Burke has been the Director for the Center for Professional
Development for the last twelve years and in 2006 was appointed as Program
Director for the Nursing and Health Care Administration and the Health
Leadership Program. Dr. Burke’s expertise is in the area of leadership and
professional development. Her more recent work addresses leadership development
in long-term care settings. Dr. Burke is an advisory board member of the
Johnson and Johnson Wharton Health Care Leadership Program and appointed member
to the Commission on Accreditation for the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Teaching
In her
role as Program Director for the Nursing Administration and the Health Care
Leadership programs, Dr. Burke develops and directs the Nursing and Health Care
Nursing Administration and Health Leadership curriculum and is the Course
Director for the N748 Leadership in Health Care, N650 Health System Analyses and
the N653 Nursing Consultation courses. In addition, Dr. Burke guest lectures in
both the graduate and undergraduate programs in the area of leadership
development. Dr. Burke has published several articles and book chapters in the
area of advanced practice, health care technology, nursing education and nursing
leadership.
Kathryn H. Bowles, PhD, RN,
FAAN
Associate Professor of Nursing

Dr. Bowles holds a BSN
from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, an MSN from Villanova, and a PhD from
the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to her position at the Penn School
of Nursing, she is the Beatrice Renfield Visiting Scholar for the Visiting Nurse
Service of New York, a Senior Fellow in the Leonard Davis Institute, a faculty
member in the Ackoff Center for Advancement of Systems Approaches, and director
of the Health Informatics Minor. Dr. Bowles leads a program of research in the
use of information technology to improve healthcare for elders and support
healthcare provider’s decision-making regarding hospital discharge referrals for
high-risk elders.
Teaching
As Course Director for N551 “Applied Health Informatics,” she teaches the
barriers and benefits of health informatics applications in developing solutions
to advance the practice of safe, effective, and efficient health care.
Research
Dr. Bowles’ program of research examines decision-making supported by
information technology to improve care for older adults. Her ongoing study,
funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, focuses on decision-making
and the development of decision support for hospital discharge referral
decisions. Other research areas include telehealth technology, quality of life
among frail elders, intervention research to close the health care racial
divide, and the use of large databases in home care to support clinical
decision-making.
Victoria L. Rich, PhD, RN,
FAAN

Assistant Dean of Clinical Practice, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing
Dr. Rich is a
leading authority on patient safety including the application and evaluation of
systems and devices. With over twenty years experience in Healthcare
Administration, Dr. Rich received her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in
Nursing Administration, her MSN from the University of Pittsburgh, also in
Nursing Administration and her BSN from the Indiana University of
Pennsylvania, Summa Cum Laude.
Currently, as the Chief Nursing Officer at the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania (HUP) and Assistant Dean of Clinical Practice, University of
Pennsylvania, School of Nursing, Dr. Rich has provided significant clinical
leadership in development of a patient safety culture for the nursing
profession. The leadership she provides is derived from the extensive
programmatic experience she obtained while functioning in the role of Vice
President of Patient Care at University Community Hospital in Tampa prior to her
position at HUP. As a member of the Florida Hospital Association Patient Safety
Commission and the Tampa Bay Coalition for Patient Safety, she has contributed
to several initiatives to raise awareness of medication safety. She is a
national consultant to hospital administrators and educators throughout the
country and serves as an advisor and content expert in patient safety for the
National Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA) and Premier Hospitals. Dr. Rich
has developed a corkscrew model of complex circularity that is used to develop a
culture of systemic mindfulness in error reduction. This model, in use in
settings nationally and internationally, was featured in the report: State of
the Science Symposium of Safe Medication Administration published in the March
2005 American Journal of Nursing.
Teaching
Dr Rich is currently the Co-Course Director in the N650 Health
System Analyses.
Susan K. Keim, MS, RN
Senior Lecturer
Ms. Keim
received her Master’s Degree at the University of Maryland with a major in
Nursing Administration and a minor in Clinical Medical-Surgical Advanced
Practice. She spent thirteen years at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in
a variety of progressive management positions in the Department of Medicine. She
has expertise in the areas of performance appraisal, professional advancement
ladders, systems development and adult teaching and learning theories.
Teaching
At the School of Nursing since 1994, Ms. Keim teaches
at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and serves as a faculty member in
the Post-master’s Teacher Education Program. She teaches systems theory in N650
Health System Analysis course, co-directs N652 Applied finance in the Nursing
and Healthcare Administration Program and is a student adviser. At the
undergraduate junior level, Ms. Keim teaches in topics related to the nursing
care of medical-surgical patients.
Adam B. Sherr, MSEd
Director of Student Registration and Information

Mr. Sherr works full time
at Penn Nursing as the Director of Student Registration and Information. He
received his MSEd from the University of Pennsylvania and is currently enrolled
in a Doctorate of Education Program at Penn's Graduate School of Education and
is on Dissertation Status. His dissertation subject is the study of
institutional philosophies in regard to undergraduate student leadership
development.
Teaching
Mr. Sherr is the co-course director in NURS 748 -Leadership
Development for Health in the Health Leadership program. In addition, he
assists in curricular development and student advising.
Letty Roth Piper, MSN
Lecturer
Ms.
Piper received her Bachelor's and Master's in Nursing from the University of
Pennsylvania. She has been the Nurse Executive at two academic medical centers,
including the University of Vermont, a number of community hospitals and a
Nursing Management Consultant with Coopers and Lybrand. Ms. Piper continues to
practice as an executive consultant to Academic Medical centers and Health
Systems.
Teaching
Ms. Piper has taught Financial Management for Nursing Executives
at the post master's level for over 20 years. She has conducted numerous
seminars and published numerous articles on Financial Management. At this
school, she is the lead lecturer in the Business of Nursing and assists in N653
Nursing Consultation.
Glenn A. Fuir, CFA, CPA, CMA,
CFM
Lecturer
Glenn is a
manager in the Community Regional Supervision Unit of the Supervision,
Regulation and Credit Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
Glenn joined the Reserve Bank ten years ago as a surveillance analyst. Before
assuming his current position in 2004, Glenn spent two years managing a unit
responsible for monitoring the credit card industry and then transitioned into
a bank examiner position.
Before joining the Federal Reserve, Glenn worked in the banking industry for 13
years, mainly as an accounting manager at a community bank. Glenn spent three
years preparing business forecasts within the asset and liability management
function at Summit Bancorp.
Glenn is a member of the CFA Society of Philadelphia and the Institute of
Management Accountants. He holds an MBA degree from Rider University and a BA
degree from Ursinus College.
Teaching
In
addition to serving as a Course Director in N610 Health Economics and Accounting
and Co-Course Director of N652 Applied Finance, Glenn is an adjunct professor
for Drexel University, where he teaches principles of finance and accounting.
Christie DiMichele, MSN, RN,
CNAA
Lecturer
Ms.
DiMichele received her Master's Degree at the University Of Pennsylvania School
Of Nursing with a major in Nursing Administration and a minor from Wharton in
business in 2005. In 2006, she became certified as a Certified Nursing
Administrator, Advanced (CNAA) through the ANCC. She has over twenty years of
experience in nursing. She has spent the majority of her career at The
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in a variety of progressive management
positions. Currently, she is the Nurse Manager of 5E, a Hematology and General
Pediatrics unit at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and a Per Diem
Administrative Nursing Supervisor at Delaware County Community Hospital in
Drexel Hill, PA. She recently received training to become a National League of
Nursing Program Evaluator and is trained to evaluate schools of nursing with the
National League of Nursing Credentialing Center. She specializes in building and
supervising diverse teams.
Teaching
At
the School of Nursing since 2006, Ms. DiMichele is actively involved in the
Nursing and Health Care Administration Program. She is a preceptor for Graduate
nurses in N650 Health System Analysis and an occasional lecturer for graduate
level classes.
Arthur H. Piper, CPA
Lecturer
Mr. Piper has a Bachelor of
Science in Accounting from the University of Scranton and has a long career in
senior financial management positions, most notably as the former Associate
Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer at the Hospital of the University
of Pennsylvania. He has also been the Vice President for Finance and Operations
at Fulton County Medical Center and has been the Vice President of the
Consulting Division at MedQuist, Inc.
Teaching
He currently co-teaches the Business of Nursing course in this
school with his wife, Ms. Letty Piper.
