Penn Nursing student, Yali Derman, has been named one of Glamour Magazine's Top 10 College Women of 2012. In remission for 11 years from leukemia, Derman made her first handbag at age 10 by sewing bandannas nurses gave her in the hospital. Working paisley print into every design, Derman has collaborated with Kate Spade and has sold about 2,000 bags, donating all proceeds to an arts facility at the hospital that treated her.
Along with being named one of Glamour’s Top 10 College Women, Derman received an additional award given by L’Oreal Cosmetics. Called “The Beauty of Giving Award,” Derman was presented with a check for $2,500 to donate to K.I.D.S.S. for Kids, which supports creative arts programs for seriously ill children.
