The support of student aid made it possible for Mary Ann Glocker to be the first in her immediate family to attend college. Since then, Mary Ann has remained committed to paying it forward, ensuring the success of the next generation of nursing leaders, and the continued advancement of health and healthcare.

As one of Penn Nursing’s most loyal supporters, Mary Ann has inspired future nurses through both her generosity and leadership. A now retired pediatric nurse practitioner, Mary Ann had close to 30 years of experience with the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, most of which were spent at the Children’s Health Center. In addition to providing outstanding pediatric care, Mary Ann was responsible for creating two innovative programs that have had a lasting impact on the children of Berks County.

Mary Ann initiated the “Access to Care Committee” in collaboration with the March of Dimes Foundation in Berks County in the 1980s and early 1990s. This Committee delivered care to many children on medical assistance, and played an influential role in inspiring state elected officials to advocate for children’s health in Pennsylvania. Mary Ann also chaired the Immunization Action Committee for Berks County in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Health. As a result of her advocacy, Hepatitis B immunizations are given to infants after birth at THRMC and state immunization cards are given to parents to keep.

In recognition of her incredible work, Mary Ann has received multiple accolades, including winning the Pennsylvania Nurses Association District 2 Nursing Practice Award, and being nominated for the Distinguished Nurse of the Year Award by NAPNAP. Mary Ann also received the Nursing Champion Award in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 2012. Her advocacy and commitment to quality care has inspired a legacy of excellence at the Children’s Health Center, while also helping educate a generation of nurse practitioner students and family practice residents.

Reflecting upon her career, Mary Ann attributes much of her success to her beginning at Penn Nursing.

“My education at Penn Nursing had a huge impact on my life and career,” said Mary Ann.

“Attending a first class school of nursing gave me the knowledge and confidence to start a new career in uncharted waters. The relationships I developed gave me the continued support in those efforts. A Penn Nursing degree shows you are well qualified for the job at hand.”

Mary Ann continues to ensure that future talented students can also pursue their dream of a Penn Nursing education through her commitment to the Penn Nursing Annual Fund. Leadership and support like Mary Ann’s plays a critical role in enabling Penn Nursing to offer top resources and opportunities and remain at the forefront of nursing education.
