A Discussion with Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky
“It was truly an honor to interview Alex Gorsky who was sincerely candid about his leadership strengths and challenges. He discussed the importance of life balance and restoration in order to perform at a consistently high level. Alex reviewed the history and evolution of the J&J credo and the importance of leadership accountability in authentically aligning strategy with the J&J mission. He discussed the value of nursing and the impact and potential that our field has on shaping innovation in healthcare delivery. J&J has been a true supporter of the nursing field and specifically of Penn Nursing; it was invaluable for our Nursing & Healthcare Administration and Health Leadership graduate students, who are burgeoning leaders, to engage with such an inspirational leader in the healthcare sector,” says Sue Keim.
Sue Keim, MS, MSN, CRNP, Program Director for Nursing & Healthcare Administration, invited him to a “fireside chat” with her class NURS699: Advanced Roles in Administrative Nursing Practice, a requisite for Nursing & Healthcare Administration and Health Leadership graduate students. They covered a variety of topics, including:
- The responsibilities of being CEO and Chairman of the Board of Johnson & Johnson;
- The variability in his day-to-day experiences;
- Innovations in health care technology and pharmaceuticals;
- How his experiences at Wharton in the MBA program shaped his leadership style;
The class also had a chance to discuss how the discipline of West Point and his military service coupled with his experiences at Wharton in the MBA program have influenced his leadership style. He also shared updates regarding the J&J Campaign for Nursing program, now in its 15th years, and his thoughts on leadership opportunities for nurses in corporate healthcare industries.
A huge thank you to Mr. Gorsky for sharing his time and wisdom!
