Public Health Leadership Seminar for Henderson

Marcus Henderson, NU’17, spent part of his summer as a participant at the 2016 Public Health Leadership Seminar. He was there representing HOSA – Future Health Professionals, an international student organization to promote career opportunities in health care.

This seminar is designed to afford HOSA members the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, refine professional capabilities and increase their awareness of the infrastructure, operations and responsibilities of the Office for Preparedness and Response for the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

During the four-day seminar, HOSA participants shadowed the Medical Reserve Corps and the staff of the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response (ASPR). Each day consisted of a daily brief from the program staff and speakers from different departments and divisions within the HHS and ASPR. Special speakers included the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr.Vivek Murthy, and the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response, Dr. Nicole Lurie.

“This opportunity provided me with a whole new perspective on the impact of public health and community health nursing, as a whole,” said Marcus “This program has inspired me to further educate myself and others on the wonderful opportunities within public health.”
