The AAHN’s Teresa E. Christy Award recognizes excellence in historical research and writing done while the research was a doctoral student. The 2009 award was presented to Jacqueline Margo Brooks Carthon, for her dissertation “No place for the dying: A tale of urban health work in Philadelphia’s Black Belt,” which she completed at the University of Pennsylvania in 2008. “No place for dying” studies the historical background of health disparities and the power of community health initiatives. Dr. Brooks Carthon is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Health Policy and Outcomes at the University of Pennsylvania.
