Bates Center Seminar Series - "The China Gadabouts: Nursing with the China Convoy 1941-1951"
Speaker: Susan Armstrong-Reid PhD, University of Guelph
Date and Time: April 24, 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM in Room 435, Floor 4, Claire Fagin Hall
Abstract: With the outbreak of WWII, the Friends Ambulance Unit was re-activated to provide conscientious objectors of all faiths with an alternative to military service. Between 1941-1951, multi-national FAU teams worked bravely and creatively in varied sites of encounter to forge new frontiers of humanitarian aid in war torn China, both geographically and intellectually. This seminar is a prelude to a monograph of the FAU China Convoy’s humanitarian works in China. To work out the themes and methodology for that study, it untangles the diverse cross-cultural experiences by comparing wartime nursing with China Convoy and the Honan experience. Click Here to RSVP.
