This fall, Center Director, Dr. Karen Buhler-Wilkerson spent three weeks in Japan as a recipient of an Invitational Fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. The purpose of the fellowship was to promote international cooperation and mutual understanding in scientific research. Dr. Wilkersons host was Professor Junko Kusakari, MPH, Ph.D., at the Center for Education and Research in Nursing Practice, Chiba University, School of Nursing. During her stay, Dr. Wilkerson had the opportunity to participate in a collaborative study of home care, give several lectures to Masters and Undergraduate nursing students and meet with faculty in several Schools of Nursing in Chiba, Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Additionally, Dr. Wilkerson made home visits with nurses in Kimitu and toured one hospital where she met with the nursing staff, patients and family members in both organizations. Nursing, Dr. Wilkerson observed, has the need and opportunity to investigate globally several research agendas related to home care and the long term needs of the worlds growing elderly populations.
