Scholarly Collaborations

The Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing has established strong interdisciplinary collaborations within the University including the Department of History and Sociology of Science, the Department of History, the Women’s Studies Program, and the Middle East Center.

A number of national, local, and international groups also join the Center in partnerships and programs related to the history of nursing and healthcare. These include the Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry at the University of Virginia, the United Kingdom Centre for the History of Nursing and Midwifery,the Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science, the Nursing History Network, the international alliance of historians of nursing, sponsored by the University of Melbourne, the Irish Society for Nursing and Midwifery History, and the Associated Medical Services Nursing History Research Unit, University of Ottawa.

The Bates Center is also the home of Nursing History Review, the official journal of the American Association for the History of Nursing. Under the editorship of Patricia D’Antonio the Review publishes original historical research by scholars from around the world.
