Center Policies and Services
The Barbara Bates Center for The Study of The History of Nursing is open to visitors Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:00 p.m.
General Access Policies
The Bates Center is open to scholars and interested non-academic researchers.
Visits must be scheduled in advance (See Visiting the Center)
Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Upon arrival, researchers must display a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport in order to complete a Researcher Application Form and consult collection materials.
In completing the Researcher Application Form, researchers agree to abide by Rules Governing the Use of Bates Center Holdings.
The Center strives to open as much of its collection to research use as possible. Restrictions may apply to unprocessed holdings.
Portions of collections may be restricted in order to comply with laws and regulations governing privacy or confidentiality or to honor requests of individual donors. Researchers will be informed of any restrictions governing the use of material they request.
The Center maintains a public e-mail box for responding to general queries. Please consult Finding Aids for information about our holdings and specific items of interest; submit a statement of your research topic to: nhistory@nursing.upenn.edu.
