Mathias Brunner Remembered

It is with great sadness that the Center announces the death on October 20th of one of its long-time supporters, Mathias J. Brunner, 76, of Lancaster, PA.

Mr. Brunner was born in Brooklyn, NY and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Pratt Institute in New York. He did his graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Brunner was nationally prominent and maintained membership in the New York Academy of Science, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Rocket Society, Phi Sigma Omega and Tau Beta Pi.

Mr. Brunner worked as a consulting engineer and senior aerothermodynamics engineer for General Electric Company from 1957 to his retirement. Previously, he had worked as a senior design engineer in the power systems division at Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Mr. Brunner held several patents on axial flow compressors and heat protection systems.

Mr. Brunner is survived by his wife of 47 years, the well-known author of nursing textbooks, Lillian Sholtis Brunner; three children, Douglas, Janet, and Carol; and a granddaughter. Mr. and Mrs. Brunner provided funding to establish the Lillian Sholtis Brunner Summer Fellowship at the Center and they both have been very devoted to preserving Nursing’s history.
