Reducing HIV Risks Among Black Substance Abusing Women
Define Sister To
Sister:
Sister to Sister
is a health promotion program for Black women. It is
designed to help Sisters understand the various behaviors that put
them at risk for health problems and to identify effective ways to
help African American women to protect themselves from those health
risks.
Some of the Health Problems Include:
●Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's)
●Alcohol and drug abuse
●Stroke
●Breast cancer
●Diabetes
What is the Purpose of
the Program:
The purpose of the program is to understand the behaviors of women
that may create health risks. By providing intensive,
culturally sensitive health information, this program seeks to
empower and educate women with skills and strategies to help reduce
their risks for various diseases.
Who is Eligible to
Participate:
●Black women who are patients on 1 of the 4 inpatient detoxification
and rehabilitation units of Presbyterian Medical Center.
●Must be 18 years or older.
●Report having vaginal intercourse at least once in the previous 90
days.
What does the Program
Include:
●Educational workshops
●Small group or one-on-one discussions
●Role plays
●Films and videos
●Fun and interactive activities
Benefits for
Participating:
●Participants will learn more about serious health risk, including
major causes of death among Black women and ways to protect yourself
from these risks.
●Participants will receive compensation for participation, a beautiful project
T-shirt, a key chain and informative brochure.
