Living Independently For Elders (LIFE) resident and artist donates paintings to raise money for Haiti

In an effort to raise money for relief work in Haiti, Mr. Hilliard Newman, a resident artist at the Living Independently For Elders program, has donated five of his paintings for a silent auction to be held at the LIFE center.

The silent auction was held at the LIFE center (4508 Chestnut Street) on Wednesday, January 27th, from 8am-1pm.  Each painting has a minimum bid of $15, but Mr. Newman hopes to raise at least $200.

The LIFE program allows low-income seniors in South and West Philadelphia who would otherwise need nursing home care the option to instead remain in their home and receive all preventive, primary, acute, and long-term health services at the center. The average member is 80 years old, suffers from eight medical conditions, takes eight medications, and experiences three or more limitations in daily activities.

LIFE is owned and operated by the School of Nursing. When the center first opened, it served 10 members from West and Southwest Philadelphia. Today, it serves 373, with an average daily census of 200 people.
