The University of Botswana was founded in 1982 and has become a strong educational presence throughout Botswana and Southern Africa. In addition to its twelve undergraduate programs, the University offers a range of graduate programs, including a Master of Nursing Science.
The University of Botswana hosted a number of Penn students during the Summer of 2004.

The Global Forum for Health Research is an independent international foundation established in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1998 with the objective of helping correct the 10/90 gap in health research.

International Student Exchange Program

Penn nursing students, James Rodgers and Margaret Crighton, were getting an overview of the seniors' activities schedule while visiting a senior center in Hong Kong. Dr. Sarah Kagan (center) is adding valuable cross-cultural insights to enhancing the students' understanding of the diverging approaches to health care in China and the US.

While Studying Abroad at the University of Botswana Sarah King and Rebecca Nanasi observed how the role of nurses in Botswana's health care system differs from that of nurses in the US. They reported on their experiences in a paper, titled "Nurses' Role in HIV/AIDS Care in Botswana: Sharing a Study Abroad Experience in Comparative Health Systems," presented (via Beth Ann Swan) at the ICOWHI 15th Congress 2004 - Sao Pedro, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Penn Nursing-Wharton undergraduate student, Ali Jaffer, presented a paper in Turkey, titled, "Merging Nursing and Business Education for Nurse Managers of the Future" and he completed a 2004 Summer Internship at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.

  Nursing Care in Mexico Examined Cross-Culturally

Carmel Bogle (pictured on the left) and Ruth Masterman (center) presented reflections on their Study Abroad experience in Mexico at the brown bag roundtable lecture Series on September 27. Nancy Etzel (right) had also been at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos over the summer. She led two brown bag roundtable discussions on Cuba (11/22) and Thailand (10/18).
