Selected Penn Faculty Presentations at International Conferences
     
  Dean Afaf I. Meleis, Council General of the International Council on Women's Health Issues - ICOWHI, presented the keynote "Women and Safety: Culture and Society." .. Other Penn participants at the 15th International Council on Women's Health Issues (ICOWHI) in Sao Pedro, Brazil were Dr. Bill McCool, who presented "Health Workers' Quality of Life" during a plenary panel and a paper with Mamie Guidera, "Women's Experiences of Perinatal Loss: A Multicultural Perspective." Dr. Beth Ann Swans' paper was titled, "Advancing Evidence-Based Interventions for Women."

Dr. Ann Rogers presented her research on fatigue and patients safety during a plenary panel session at the IX. Pan American Nursing Research Colloquium in Lima, Peru (November 1-3, 2004).

Drs. Rogers is a faculty member of the Center for Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Valerie T. Cotter, MSN, CRNP, Director of the Adult Health & Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Programs presented “Restraint Free Care in Older Adults with Dementia” while a Visiting Scholar at Aomori University of Health and Welfare, Japan July 21-28, 2004. Her presentations from this visit and at Keio University Hospital, Tokyo, are available online in English and Japanese.

  Dr. Beth Ann Swan, Associate Director of the Office of International Programs & WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing & Midwifery Leadership, presented a paper, titled, "Improving health through research: Implications for evidence-based practice" at the 3rd International Multidisciplinary Health Care Conference, Department of Health Studies, University of South Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa in February 2004.

  Dr. Swan presented another paper, "Improving nursing practice through evidence: Implementation readiness and educational strategies" at the Second International Evidence-Based Nursing Preconference, 15th International Nursing Research Congress, Sigma Theta Tau International, Dublin, Ireland, July 22-24, 2004.

  Drs. Terry Richmond and Edith Simpson presented papers at the annual Injury Prevention conference of the World Health Organization in Vienna, Austria on June 7, 2004. Dr. Simpson's research aims to identify factors that explain and predict health-promoting behaviors.
Dr. Richmond serves as the Research Director of the Firearm Injury Center at Penn where she works with an interdisciplinary team. She is currently the Principal Investigator for a five-year NIMH-funded study “Major Depression following Minor Injury.”

  Dr. Neville Strumpf, the first Grace Tien Visiting Professor in Nursing Studies, gave the inaugural lecture on February 24, 2004 at the University of Hong Kong and presented "Shifting Policy and Practice in Acute Care: Restraint Free Care for Hospitalized Elders"at the Seminar for Medical and Health Research Network.

  Linda H. Aiken, PhD, RN, Director of the Center for Health Outcomes Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing was the keynote speaker at the Building Excellence Through Evidence Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, June 27-29, 2003. A powerpoint of her talk, "Outcomes of Nursing Care: An International Perspective" is online.

  Kathy Bowles, PhD, RN, presented a research paper titled "Building a decision support system with expert knowledge" at The 8th International Congress in Nursing Informatics, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on June 23, 2003. Co-authors included Mary Naylor, John Holmes (School of Medicine) and Matthew Liberatore and Robert Nydick both from Villanova University.

  Terri Weaver, PhD, FAAN, RN, CS, was invited speaker at the 7th World Congress of Sleep Apnea in Helsinki, Finland. Dr. Weaver, a nationally and internationally recognized researcher on sleep disorders, presented her research and co-chaired and organized over eight symposia and sessions at this international conference.

  Sarah H Kagan, PhD, RN, Associate Professor of Gerontological Nursing, and Doris R. Schwartz Term Professor in Gerontological Nursing, presented a keynote address to the Frontiers in Biomedical Research - Hong Kong University (HKU) 2002 and lead a seminar which outlined current health care delivery and policy concerns for aging societies given the global shortfall of nursing education, service, and research.

  Dr. Eileen Sullivan-Marx presented a keynote address, entitled "Quality of Care and Geriatric Nurse Practitioners" at the 3rd International Nursing Conference on Elderly Health and Nursing in Seoul, Korea. There were over 100 research papers on quality of health care presented by nurse researchers from Korea, Japan, Thailand, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and Slovenia.

International Scholars' Presentations at Penn Nursing
     
  On July 28th, 2003 the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing hosted two renowned public health experts to discuss the SARS epidemic. Dr. Sophia Siu-Chee Chan, head of the department of Nursing Studies, and Dr. Gabriel M. Leung, Clinical Assistant Professor in Public Health Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, gave a lecture entitled, "SARS: The Intersection of Public Health, Epidemiology and Clinical Nursing."

  On November13, 2003, the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and School of Medicine hosted University of Botswana faculty Dr. Esther Seloilwe, Dr. Naomi Sebonia, Dr. Howard Moffat, Dr. Patson Mazonde, and Dr. Donald deKorte at a Penn-Botswana HIV Symposium. Speakers discussed topics, such as the impact of HIV on inpatient care and nursing care in Botswana.

  Ms. Patricia Maputle, Head Social Worker, Holy Cross Hospice, Botswana and her colleagues share insights about Palliative Care with Rosemary Polomano, PhD, RN, FAAN, Sarah King, BSN student, and Salimah Meghani and Cheryl Monturo, both Doctoral students at Penn.
Dr. Naomi Mmapelo Seboni, University of Botswana, was named the 2004-2005 International Scholar in Residence.

  Dean Bola Ofi, PhD and Adenike Onibokun, RN, PhD (Lecturer I) from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, have been at our School of Nursing from Nov 15-Dec 3, 2004 as part of a project, "Collaborative Programs in Nursing and Peace and Conflict Studies with the University of Ibadan." This project has been funded by the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; it aims to strengthen the higher education system in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.
