Dr. Afaf I. Meleis
Dean of the School of Nursing
Dubbed the “Energizer Dean,” Afaf I. Meleis pours all of her get-up-and-go into improving the nursing education, research and practice that transforms and empowers our communities here in Philadelphia and around the world. Penn Nursing’s passionate leader since 2002, she has fortified connections between the School’s research-based innovations and its transformative community efforts. During her tenure the School has pioneered Philadelphia outreach programs such as Healthy in Philadelphia, doubled the size of our Living Independently For Elders program and launched dozens of hands-on international clinical partnerships. In April 2010, under her direction, Penn Nursing will bring together community leaders from around the world for the International Council on Women’s Health Issues conference. For Dean Meleis, the Penn Nursing Kresge Challenge is about passion for and dedication to caring to change the world – a drive for Penn Nursing to continue the leadership in nursing science that improves quality of life, promotes healthy communities and provides top-quality care to those who need it most.
