Visiting International Graduate Students

Doctoral education for international students has long been a top priority at Penn Nursing.  One of the fundamental questions doctoral education faces today is its role in the international community and an increasingly globalized world.  How can institutions in the United States best educate nursing researchers from abroad who will return to their home countries?

At Penn Nursing, one answer is through the Visiting International PhD Scholars Program, a "sandwich program," in which international students complete a year of doctoral education at home, come to Penn for about one year to develop their research concept, and return to their home university to conduct their study and complete their degree.  The program is custom designed for each student by expert faculty mentors. Through direct work on their faculty mentor's research teams, and selected observational experiences,  visiting scholars gain the knowledge to develop their research questions into a substantive dissertation proposal.

Similarly we provide expert faculty mentorship and clinical observation opportunities for visiting master’s and post-master’s degree nurses from abroad.

Graduate students from abroad are accepted as non-matriculating International Visiting Scholars on the bases of a strong match between their goals for a visit at Penn Nursing and the availability of Penn Nursing faculty with expertise in the area of those goals.  The process begins with the potential International Visiting Scholar submitting an application, and the applicant’s agreement to the terms of acceptance specified in the  International Visitor's Application Form.  In addition, interested applicants are encouraged to visit the University of Pennsylvania's Office of International Programs' website to view guidelines for International Students and Scholars (e.g. visa information, immigration law, etc..).

During their stay at Penn Nursing they are provided office space with computer, library privileges, and a University of Pennsylvania email address.

Visiting International Undergraduate Students

Small groups of undergraduate students from abroad are welcome during the School’s academic year for observational experiences in our BSN level courses, including clinical courses.  Each interested student must submit a completed International Visitor's Application Form.  Acceptance depends upon strength of match between applicant’s goals and Penn Nursing faculty availabililty, and applicant’s agreement to the terms of acceptance stated in the application form.   In addition, interested applicants are encouraged to visit the University of Pennsylvania's Office of International Programs' website to view guidelines for International Students and Scholars (e.g. visa information, immigration law, etc..).

Visiting International Professional Nurses

Colleagues from abroad are welcome to visit the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.  Initial inquiry for a brief visit of up to a day or two should be addressed to Dr. Marjorie Muecke at muecke@nursing.upenn.edu    Those interested in visiting for a longer period of time should submit a completed International Visitor’s Application Form International Visitor's Application Form .   In addition, interested applicants are encouraged to visit the University of Pennsylvania's Office of International Programs' website to view guidelines for International Students and Scholars (e.g. visa information, immigration law, etc..).
