Teaching
As one of the faculty teaching the senior year clinical leadership course, N 370/371 Advanced Clinical Practicum in Nursing, Dr. McCauley prepares students for the transition from the student to the professional nurse role. "Being a Clinician Educator with a clinical role at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and having direct contact with the issues that nurses at the bedside face in practice, I am able to provide students with the content and practice experience to make that difficult transition easier. Also, getting to know our seniors as they are about to graduate makes me more effective in my Interim Associate Dean role. I love working with our faculty and students to improve our undergraduate program." Dr. McCauley also shares her knowledge of cardiovascular nursing as a guest lecturer in other courses.

Research
As part of a research team led by Dr. Mary Naylor, Dr. McCauley brings her clinical background in the care of patients with heart disease plus her knowledge of hospital systems. Their current work examining the needs of elders with heart failure and other cardiac illnesses in the transition from hospital to home has gained national attention. "As a clinician I have seen the negative impact that deficiencies in our health care systems have on patients and families. It is exciting to be discovering new ways to enhance the ability of patients and families to manage cardiac disease and live productively, out of the hospital. In the process we are identifying the unique contributions that nurses make."

Clinical Practice
With a physician colleague, Dr. McCauley oversees the quality care processes for the Cardiopulmonary Arrest system at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. They actively work to ensure that systems are in place to enable clinicians to resuscitate patients most effectively and to monitor the care patients receive to improve outcomes. Dr. McCauley also consults with nursing staff and others about management of patients with heart disease and teaches in formal courses. Through Dr. McCauley's connections to professional organizations at the national level, she is able to share strategies and resources with colleagues at home.

I am fortunate to be at Penn where I am able to combine clinical practice, education of students, and clinically relevant research all in one role. I am blessed to be working with the best students and faculty who are all committed to advancing the profession and preparing the most spectacular next generation of nurses. It all comes together so that as I learn and grow in one dimension of my life, it improves my effectiveness in other areas.
