Ms. Durain has had a long term interest in women's health that began during her undergraduate work in psychology and women's studies at the University of Pittsburgh. This led to contact with a homebirth nurse-midwife and eventually nursing and midwifery school. She has worked as a staff nurse-midwife at North Central Bronx Hospital, Familyborn Birth and Women's Health Center, and Planned Parenthood of the Mercer Area. She served as the Executive Director of the Familyborn Birth and Women's Health Center for several years. Her professional activities include various officer and legislative advocacy positions within the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. Her graduate work in public health was completed at the Rutgers University/University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and focused on health policy interventions to combat racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare delivery. She has served as a consultant to the New Jersey State Department of Medicaid Office of Quality Assurance.

Teaching
Ms. Durain's teaching responsibilities reflect her interest in the gynecological care of women throughout the lifespan, the impact of health policy on both providers and clients, and the role of politics in women's health, both in the United States and throughout the world. She co-teaches a unique course on the health of incarcerated women in the Philadelphia Women's Jail. In this course, UPenn students sit side by side in the jail classroom with incarcerated women and together explore the health and health care needs of incarcerated women. She also co-teaches a course on maternal child health that includes two weeks of international clinical experience.
