Barbara received a B.A. in Government from Cornell University, a B.S. in Nursing from Columbia University, and graduated from the University of with an M.S.N. in Nurse-Midwifery in 1988. She entered the profession of Midwifery to affect social change through empowering women.

Teaching
Barbara began clinical teaching as a staff nurse-midwife at the FamilyBorn Birth Center in 1990. She served as a clinical preceptor for midwifery students from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, the Community-Based Nurse-Midwifery Education Program (CNEP), and the University of Pennsylvania. In 2000, Barbara joined the faculty of the Penn Midwifery program, as Course Director for the Intrapartum, Postpartum and Newborn course and the Professional Issues course. She has served as Assistant Course Director for the Antepartum course and the final course in Midwifery - Integration. She continues to precept midwifery students, as well as family practice residents, in the clinical setting.

Clinical Practice
Barbara practiced obstetrical nursing in a wide range of settings, ranging from home visits to community hospitals to regional medical centers. As a Certified Nurse-Midwife, she worked for 10 years in a free-standing birth center. She served as Clinical Director for HiTOPs, an adolescent reproductive health center, in Princeton, NJ, from 1998 to 2000. Since 2001, Barbara has been part of a private practice of certified nurse-midwives and obstetrician-gynecologists with privileges at a community hospital near her home.

Barbara characterizes the care she gives as woman-centered, with a strong focus on client education and participation. Her area of expertise in clinical practice and teaching is the use of different positions for labor and birth, the appropriate use of technology, and optimizing normal birth. She enjoys providing routine gynecological care to women of any age, with a focus on health promotion, and especially enjoys working with adolescents, making their first experiences in women's health positive and rewarding.


Honors/Credentials
Barbara was inducted in Sigma Theta Tau in 1985. She received the Regional Award for excellence from the American College of Nurse-Midwives in 1997. She was appointed to the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners Nurse-Midwifery Liaison Committee from 1997-2002 where she led efforts to raise standards of practice by including CNMs, CMs and CPMs in midwifery regulations. In 2009, Barbara received a Fulbright Award to teach midwifery education in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago for one semester.
