Established by Terri Lipman, Assistant Dean of Community Engagement at the School of Nursing, and Jodie Feinberg, a 2015 Penn Nursing graduate and President’s Engagement Prize Winner - the Community Champions program is an initiative with a unique focus on service learning that enriches the student experience.
To enhance the educational experience of Penn Nursing students by providing meaningful opportunities for learning about the social determinants of health through community engagement- and by doing so, effect positive changes in health and wellness in the members of the community.
In a truly interdisciplinary effort, Penn is working with the city of Philadelphia to increase physical activity in West Philadelphia through community and academic partnerships.
Service learning is a pedagogical approach that has proven valuable in helping undergraduate nursing students better understand specific needs of diverse populations and gives them opportunities to apply their knowledge to meet those needs.
These are students who are committed to community engagement, and dedicate several hours a week to a variety of initiatives identified by the community. The program’s focus on service learning transfers civic responsibility and invaluable skills that transforms him or her into superior nurses.
