Kamila A. Alexander is a Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA pre-doctoral fellow in the Center for Health Equity Research and an AIDS Certified Registered Nurse. After seven years of working as a community health nurse and over ten years providing public health services with underserved communities, she brings strong interests in the social determinants of health to her PhD studies.  She was awarded a William T.V. Fontaine Fellowship during her first year as a doctoral student.  The influences of race, gender, and class on women’s experiences with sexually-related outcomes underpin her research.  She is currently studying how women’s perceptions of control and safety shape HIV and sexually transmitted infection transmission, unintended pregnancy, and sexual violence in their relationships.  While pursuing a PhD in Nursing she is also fulfilling the requirements for a graduate certificate in gender, culture, and society from the Penn Women’s Studies Program.

Health Equity Research

Ms. Alexander’s research interests are centered on the contextualization of science as it relates to the everyday sexual lives of men and women.  Her special focus on the intersection of women-controlled safe sex technologies and the social situations that determine their use drive her intellectual inquiry.  In the future, she aspires to engage in activist scholarship through teaching and research.
