(CHD) Congenital Heart Disease Research

Why should my baby and I participate in this study?

The information on your child’s feeding behavior and calorie needs will greatly benefit our understanding of how feeding and nutrition effect the growth and development of infant's with congenital heart disease (CHD). It is essential that we collect and compare information on infants with CHD who exhibit delays or feeding problems with those infants who do not exhibit them. This will help us to understand the factors that are different between infants with CHD who develop and grow normally and those who fail to grow. Information about the feeding pattern and calorie needs that influence positive growth and development in children born with CHD are therefore essential to the success of the study. After your child's information is combined with that of other children, we will have a greater knowledge of the factors that influence growth and development in children born with CHD. Your child's participation in this study will assist nurses, doctors and other health care professionals learn more about the special nutritional needs of infants with CHD, in order to provide better care in the future. If any of the tests reveal an unexpected result, the information will be shared with your primary care physician if you request that we do so.
